Department of Cooperatives Engages with Pakro Okada Riders The Cooperative Unit of the Akuapim South Municipal Assembly met with the Pakro Okada Riders Association on 18th February, 2026 to guide them on the process of forming a registered union ,that would enable them to access institutional benefits.

The engagement followed the Municipal Chief Executive’s earlier community interaction with residents of Pakro, during which he pledged to formalise and authenticate the riders’ operations. The Municipal Director, Mrs. Kwakye Dorcas, explained that for the association to qualify as a union, theymust open a bank account and mobilise the required shared capital into the union’s account, in addition to paying a stipulated fee for the issuance of membership certificates. She further noted that once duly registered, the Assembly would support the riders to obtain the necessary operational licences to minimise persistent harassment by security agencies.

Outlining the advantages of registration, she indicated that the Assembly would liaise with relevant institutions such as the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to facilitate the riders’ enrolment onto their respective platforms to access statutory services. She also disclosed that the Assembly intends to construct a permanent station for the riders and provide standardised apparel to enhance identification, professionalism, and safety.

Prospective members are required to meet all the stated financial obligations before admission into the union. Addressing concerns of the previously issued Commercial National Motor (Okada) licence at the national level, the Director clarified that the licence was legitimate and not fraudulent.

The Chairman of the Pakro Okada Union, Mr. Mawuli Apeadu, commended the Assembly for its intervention and assured members’ readiness to cooperate with the MCE’s directive aimed at securing and regularising their operations.

He added that the union operates a daily levy, known as a “booking fee,” contributed by its 67 members to cater for operational expenses and chairs and mattresses for rentals. Members were also advised to prioritise their health and avoid the use of illicit substances purported to enhance work performance.

In addition, the union has diversified its revenue streams through the purchase of mattresses and chairs for rental services.

Overall, the Pakro Okada Union continues to consolidate its institutional framework through defined membership criteria, structured financial contributions, and forward-looking development initiatives, reaffirming its commitment to improving members’ welfare, promoting professionalism, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
